Features of spearfishing for croaker
The requirements for spearfishing for spearfishing are minimal: the ability to harpoon a fish weighing 3 kg from a gun from a short distance. Preference should be given to small compact pneumatic guns, since hunting is mainly carried out in the labyrinth of underwater crevices and grottoes, where the main thing is to find fish.
The croaker, a brownish-purple bottom fish with golden bronze sides, is quite common on the rocky coasts of the Crimea and the Caucasus. Yellow with black stripes of the dorsal and caudal fins, a white abdomen and a pronounced white border around the mouth, a small non-poisonous spine near the anal fin. In shape, the croaker is similar to carp, although it has finer scales. Unlike mullet, this fish is not flocking – you will often find more than two or three individuals together.
There are two varieties of this fish – dark and light croaker. The maximum weight of the first is 5-6 kilograms, while its light brother reaches a weight of 30 kilograms. Most often, individuals from one to three kilograms are found.
The croaker leads mainly a nocturnal way of life, going out at dusk to the shore, where it eats actively, getting caught on the “charged” with small crabs. He does not disdain a piece of fish, shrimp or greasy crustacean, considered a delicacy in all fish.
During the day, the croaker rests among the underwater cliffs and stones at depths of 5 to 20 meters, although it probably also occurs deeper, but try to dive there! Very attractive for hunting piles of stones on the “banks” (a kind of bottom elevations), where all underwater life is concentrated.
The requirements for underwater equipment are minimal: the ability to harpoon a fish weighing 3 kilograms from a gun from a short distance. Preference should be given to small compact pneumatic guns, since hunting is mainly carried out in the labyrinth of underwater crevices and grottoes, where the main thing is to find fish. Take more authentic fins – it will be easier to dive to great depths. It should be noted that good physical preparation and the ability to stop on time are extremely important for hunting croaker. Carried away by the search for prey at a depth, you can “sit out” so that then the temperature drop is a water haze – the water at the boundary of the warm and cold layers looks oily and seems to melt. A similar phenomenon can be observed on a hot day over the hot asphalt of the highway. Any sports suit (if, of course, there is no wetsuit) that protects the body not only from hypothermia, but also from cuts on double-winged shells – mussels, which, in fact, are covered with almost all stones, will be useful.
The edges of the mussels simply do not surface: oxygen starvation sometimes leads to a sudden loss of consciousness. You should pay attention to the temperature of the water – sometimes near the bottom it is significantly lower than on the surface. Moreover, sharp temperature drops of 10 or more degrees are frequent (for example, at the top + 24 ° C, at the bottom + 10 ~ 12 ° C). A hunter diving without a wetsuit, if caught in such cold water, may experience cramping and cramping. A sign of sharp razor-sharp, and it is easy to cut (and very deeply) unprotected parts of the body, it is necessary to swim, stones.
The tactics of hunting are quite simple: starting from three to four meters, you, diving and slowly gaining depth, examine all more or less large stones with grottoes, niches and various “peaks”. The croaker is found but there. It is necessary to examine even the narrowest gaps, invisible from above, between the stone and the bottom – the fish can stand here, clinging to the “ceiling”, and in the dusk of the “underwater room” with a very narrow entrance, only the white belly and lips of the fish are visible. Before you shoot, think about whether you can get the trophy from under the stone.
Powerful rifles easily pierce the croaker through and through, and the arrow that has broken free will often jam in the grottoes, and it is almost impossible to get it out of there – stone burrows are most often quite long and inaccessible. If the boom is still stuck, leave the gun under water. The transparency of water makes it possible to find it without difficulty, unless, of course, there is a super-powerful current carrying you. Before you dive for a gun, take a good breath. Remember that in the previous dive you spent a lot of energy, having consumed almost the entire supply of oxygen. Very promising for hunting underwater grottoes in which a person can swim.
In the shade of these caves, the fish is not very shy.
How to find an underwater “can”? Listen to the sea. Even in the lightest excitement, not large underwater pebbles, coming into motion and hitting each other, create a surf noise. By the increasing sound, as by a locator, you can easily (if, of course, “banks” are) find them in the selected water area. Such underwater mounds are a chaotic pile of stones over which future trophies soar almost always, slowly moving their fins. To get to them, frankly, is difficult. The croaker in the free space is very careful and, at the slightest danger, quickly hides in crevices.
